About Data Umbrella

Data Umbrella is a non-profit global community for underrepresented persons in data science. We organize online data science events for the community. All levels are welcome, beginners and experts. Our Code of Conduct applies to all of our spaces.

Announcements

Blogs

Check out our latest blogs:

  • Bayesian Modeling and Computation in Python

  • Report: Data Umbrella / PyMC Open Source Working Sessions (coming soon!)

Call for Speakers

We are looking for speakers on the following topics. If you or someone you know can speak on these topics, please email us: info@dataumbrella.org

  • Open Source Literacy (history, challenges, education or other related topics)

  • How to Debug in Python

Call for Volunteers: Video Timestamps

We are looking for assistance in adding video timestamps.

  1. Timestamps make it easy for viewers to get to the part in the video they are interested in.

  2. Timestamps also help potential viewers find the video based on their search terms.

We have instructions on how you can contribute to this project on GitHub. Help us help the community. Pick a video and get started!

Software Testing in Open Source and Data Science (Eric Ma)

This presentation covers:

  • Importance of software testing in open source software (OSS): correctness, reliability, contracts against breakages in the future

  • Why software testing actually matters for data scientists' work as well, with a case study from my daily work

  • Where to get practice with software testing

  • Navigating the tradeoff between immediate velocity and long-term productivity when deciding how much to test

Welcome Message to Open Source (by Mariatta Wijaya)

Mariatta Wijaya, a core developer for core Python shares a few inspirational remarks for those beginning or continuing their journey in contributing to open source.

Software Engineering for Probabilistic Programming (Mitzi Morris)

Our goal is to provide a holistic introduction to Bayesian modeling for data scientists as well as to demonstrate best practices for Bayesian data analysis and prediction. We use the Stan probabilistic programming language and inference engines to do inference, and the plotnine package for visualization. Applied statistical modeling starts with the question we are trying to answer and the available data. We must understand both the data and the analysis goals before proceeding to model building. We use the Stan probabilistic programming language and inference engine to build and fit our models, via modern Python interface CmdStanPy, and we use the Python package plotnine for visualization.

API Tutorial: Building APIs with FastAPI (Abdulazeez Abdulazeez Adeshina)

This event aims to introduce the audience to the FastAPI framework and how to use it. An example API that allows user make predictions with the K-cluster classification algorithm is also demonstrated.

React Tutorial Part 1: Background

This talk will introduce attendees to React, a free and open source JavaScript-based library that encourages declarative component-based development of user interfaces (UI). We will start with covering the basic concepts of front-end web development with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript before learning how to leverage React to simplify creation of interactive web UIs. This talk will conclude with a recap of what we've learned together and recommendations for continuing to learn about front-end web development and React.

React Tutorial Part 2: JavaScript, Node.js

React Tutorial Part 3: React Fundamentals, Build Your First React Front-end Application

Community Corner

PyCon Ghana

Data Umbrella is excited to announce our collaboration with PyCon Ghana 2022 as a Community Partner. PyCon Ghana is the annual gathering for the community using and developing the open-source Python programming language to learn, collaborate, and share experiences. It is hosted by the Python Software Community in Ghana, a non-profit organization that seeks to equip and empower society through technology, with Python and other related technologies.

This is an open event for all programming beginners, intermediates, professionals and even industry enthusiasts that love Python. The event will be taking place in Accra, Ghana, on the 13th -15th of October, 2022. To register and find out more information on the event, kindly visit: https://gh.pycon.org/

Early bird tickets are currently up for grabs! So don't wait too long. Also, you have the opportunity to buy a 'Sharing Ticket' and share with others who may like to attend. If you have any questions, you can reach out to the organizers via pycon-organizers@pythonghana.org
