Data Umbrella is a non-profit global community for underrepresented persons in data science. We organize online data science events for the community. All levels are welcome. Our Code of Conduct applies to all of our spaces.

Announcements

Press Mention

Polly Mitchell-Guthrie, a community member and a long-time proponent of diversity, was interviewed by the magazine Diversity in Action on her career in data analytics. She shared Data Umbrella as a community which supports underrepresented persons. The full article is available on pages 56 and 57. We have featured this on our Press Page on the DU Blog.

Milestone Achieved ! (Data Umbrella YouTube)

Our YouTube channel hit 2000 subscribers in the month of October 2022. Shoutout to the Data Umbrella team, our speakers, sponsors and community contributors for all their contributions this past year!

Call for Volunteers: Data Events Board

Data Umbrella is building an event board.  If you have skills in React, JavaScript, Django, CSS / HTML or design work, check out our open issues on GitHub.

Call for Volunteers: Data Umbrella Blog

We are making some updates to the format of our blog home page and there are other items on our wishlist. If you have skills in: Jekyll, Ruby, Markdown, checkout our open issues on GitHub.

Call for Volunteers: Video Timestamps

We are looking for assistance in adding video timestamps.

We have instructions on how you can contribute to this project on GitHub. Help us help the community. Pick a video and get started!

Call for Speakers

We are looking for speakers on the following topics. If you or someone you know can speak on these topics, please email us: info@dataumbrella.org

  • Open Source Literacy (history, challenges, education or other related topics)

  • How to Debug in Python

Upcoming Events

Introduction to Rust Programming

Rust: A language empowering everyone to build reliable and efficient software.

An introduction to Rust Programming for complete beginners, we will go over what is Rust, how to install it, how to use it online, basic structure of a program, core concepts of Rust and a little CLI program.

Contributing to ArviZ and Open Source: Social and Technical Sides

ArviZ is a Python package for exploratory analysis of Bayesian models. Includes functions for posterior analysis, data storage, sample diagnostics, model checking, and comparison. In this webinar we will go over both social and technical aspects we have to face when we contribute to ArviZ and to open source in general. I will go over all kinds of challenges: from finding an issue to work on and understanding how to work on it to submitting the pull request and addressing the feedback received. Challenges both I have faced and continue to face. The talk will be focused on ArviZ, but it should also be useful to anyone interested in contributing to open source.

Exploring Open Source Sprint Data via a Python Plotly Dashboard [PyOhio 2022]

Plotly is a versatile python graphing library which lets us make interactive graphs. In this talk, we will interpret open source sprint data presented using a Python Plotly Dashboard. We will learn how the dashboard presentation permits extended perspectives of data with multiple dimensions.

How to Make Open Source Contributions to Fastai

Learn how you can get started with contributing to fastai projects. Contributing to fastai is an excellent way to sharpen your python, engineering and data science skills.

An Overview of 3D Image Processing Using scikit-image

This presentation will introduce how to analyze three dimensional stacked and volumetric images in Python, mainly using scikit-image. Here we will study how to preprocess data using filtering, binarization and segmentation techniques. Also, we will inspect, count and measure attributes of objects and regions of interest in the data. We will finish the tutorial presenting tools to visualize 3D data.

A Bioimage Data Analysis Workflow with scikit-image

scikit-image is a well-established Python library boasting a wide collection of image processing algorithms. We show that it is well-suited for bioimage data analysis workflows by presenting a biological application from the literature. The dataset is a time sequence of microscopy images of human cells. The presentation is intended as a step-by-step, follow-along tutorial.
